Marilyn Wong ~ Untitled (Chinese Imperial Schoolroom)
Marilyn Wong
Untitled (Chinese Imperial Schoolroom), 2006
Acrylic and graphite on board
10.75 x 17.75”
Marilyn Wong (b. 1949, Pennsylvania) works with Creativity Explored, a progressive studio in San Francisco's Mission District that supports over 130 artists with developmental disabilities. Marilyn Wong has continued to develop a unique style rooted in repetition and form. While purely abstract at a glance, Wong's work often depicts pop culture characters and celebrities, like Michael Jackson and Mickey Mouse, and sometimes includes Chinese characters. Across her practice, whether working on paper or on her epic large-scale canvases, Wong’s line is confident and gestural while simultaneously following a specific system of construction.
Her work has been shown at the Oakland Museum of California (Oakland), San Francisco Art Institute (San Francisco); Creativity Explored (San Francisco); California Museum (Sacramento); Minnesota Street Project (San Francisco); 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art (Kanazawa, Japan); SOMArts (San Francisco); Yerba Buena Center for the Arts (San Francisco); amongst many others.
